Re covering a Lamp

Since moving into our home, and beginning our 'rental' journey, I have been more inspired to add some colour to our home. I have been in the safe zone for so long, using mostly whites, tans , beige's and browns to decorate and I still love that look, however when you rent there aren't many things in the house that have control over, other than your soft furnishings.
The window treatments can't be changed, you are limited as to what you can hang on the walls and can't change anything big (like cupboards, paint , bench tops etc).
So whats the solution?
Well my solution is to add colour with new throw cushions, recovering lamp shades, pretty table runners and painting a few items around the place. So far so good!
After sharing some piccies of my recovering adventures, I was asked a few questions, so what better way to answer everyone , than to show you just how I covered my lamp shade.
Now I am NO expert, I am really not sure if this is the proper way to do it but its what worked for me.

Recovering a Lamp Shade

Supplies;

I started with a neutral colour lampshade that came with our standard lamp (the lamp itself was $20 from Target).
Fabric to the length of the diameter of your shade
A hot glue gun
A can of Spray Adhesive (mine was purchased at Spotlight)

Spray your first section, with the nozzle about 20cm from the shade.
Its best to spray the lamp shade in small sections, because the Spray Adhesive dries quite quickly.

Lay your fabric over the area that has the wet spray adhesive, ensuring that you have a seam allowance on either side ( I measured my fabric and added 3cm to the width to allow for this)

Smooth with your hand as the fabric is rolled on , to remove any air bubbles or creases in the fabric.

Continue this process for the rest of the lamp shade until you have covered it all .

This is what it should look like when it is all covered, with the seam allowance on the top and bottom.

Cut off any excess fabric, leaving another 2-3m for the seam , and fold it over. I ironed my seam so that it would sit flat on the lamp shade ( just gently ran the iron over the fabric and lamp shade)

Run a strip of hot glue just under the seam and press to flatten.

Next we need to fold the small seam on each rim over and secure with a line of hot glue as well. Again, its best to work in small sections as the hot glue cools and sets quite quickly.
Run a length of glue, fold the fabric over and wait a few seconds until it sets, repeat the whole way around.

Ta - Da!
There you have an updated, brighter and customised lamp shade to suit your living area and colour scheme.
And it only took an hour or so. Now I am looking for my next victim to be recovered!
Its addictive!

Lately ......

Lately ..  I have been the blogger that doesn't blog.
A Mum enjoying the slower pace of the school holidays
A lady going mad because all of my favourite shows (that I like to watch online) are on season breaks! (first world problems here peeps)
And a crazy DIY-er with a few projects on the go, paint in my hair and all over my arms and waiting on bits and pieces to finish them all off!

Lately life has been busy, the weather has been glorious (in the sunny Pilbara) and we have plenty to look forward to. That always seems to make the days and weeks fly by!

Hubby has started a shift roster, which is bittersweet. Long days , where I am literally doing everything and he is just eating, working and sleeping but then bigger blocks of time off. We can take day trips, I can work a little more and we have more time to spend together.  Like I said ... bittersweet.

I seem to have found my crafty mojo. The only problem being , I want to have a go at everything that has been on my wish or 'to do' list for a while. So much I want to do, so little time and so little supplies in this town! Oh how I miss Spotlight!

I have so many projects and bits and pieces to share with you all, but here is a bit of whats been happening in the Team M house ....

The painting of shadow boxes, these ones are from Cotton on Kids

And this is from Kmart (it was beige and hessian but I undercoated them with this white before painting on the colour coats)

A photo on Instagram inspired me to tizzy up the kids kitchen! It is nearly completed , just waiting on some yummy wrapping paper I am using as a splash back and I will definitely be sharing the finished product!

Post coming soon!!

School holiday fun has meant lots of plays at the park,  lots of scooter riding, a day trip to Karratha , and a trip to the movies yesterday! So excited as it doesn't happen very often up here, and it was Angus' first time!

The weather has been chilly, for Pilbara standards, and I took the opportunity to whip out the beloved boots! Such a novelty!

More paint projects, baskets and lids. Frames for walls and hooks. Fun fun

One of the finished mini projects , a simple Ikea jar , a spare knob glued on the top and a touch of spray paint. A cute update for my 'Tea and Coffee Cupboard" revamp. Again, another post to share when the labels have arrived and I am finished!

I have crates of fabric begging to be turned into something pretty and a few bunny dresses and skirts were the prefect starter projects!

Late afternoon walks along the paths and lookouts to kill time while waiting for Daddy to finish work. This really is a beautiful part of the country, and somewhere that people just never want to visit.

And the most important thing of all. I've been busy being a Mum to my 4 cherubs. When I posted this photo on instagram I wrote this ;

Motherhood is sleep deprivation and self doubt, testing and a content challenge. You lose a lot of who you were before but become so much more in the process. Today I feel lucky to have 4 happy , healthy kids (and I will use this post to look back on next week when school holidays start and they are fighting like cat and dog)

And they have been fighting , but they have also been playing beautifully. I still feel the same a few weeks later, at the tail end of the holidays , thankfully!!

Happy Saturday everyone, I am looking forward to sharing some new things soon!

The DIY Laundry

This post has been a long time coming, as our new laundry has been in for some time now (like wellllll over 6 months, probably more like 9 months!!). I guess it has never "felt" finished to me, as its not. Perhaps this post will give a little encouragement to the man of the house to complete the finishing touches. (Not so subtle hint there love!)
Anyhooo, since whipping up the last piece of wall art, I have felt compelled to share.

I wish I had before pics of our laundry, I would have them somewhere but not handy , and I am not patient enough to find them or wait  ( DH is nodding his head in agreeance).
Picture a very basic laundry. Just a big space for a washing machine, the standard trough and not much else. It needed help.
We purchased our house as a Spec home, directly off the building company and all in all, I am happy with most things. I do love it.  There are only a few things about our home I would change (other than adding a few extra rooms) and the laundry was definitely one of them.
We bath our babies and sometimes older children in the laundry, so we needed somewhere to be able to change them etc. I wanted more storage. And of course, to look prettier. I am a girl after all.

If money was no object ( a girl can only dream) , there would have been more that I would have loved to do. Including floor tiles and moving the power and water taps from the wall (again, so it would look prettier) but we were on a budget and it just didn't stretch that far.

Without further ado, our new laundry space;

Links to where items were purchased are listed also, or as close to them as I can find. Most items are from Ikea, Bunnings or Target.

We had already put the drying rack and hooks on the wall, but have recently added the 2 frames prints. The basket hanging from the hook has a roll of toilet paper , strange I know but Max and Lacey's pottys are underneath so this is a convenient spot for us.

I didn't want to spend any money on the wall art, so I found this FREE Wash, Dry, Fold, Repeat  printable on Pinterest and just popped it in an Ikea Frame, as with the home made art next to it.
I made that using some cardstock, letters and glued on a peg.

There are plenty of gorgeous prints on Etsy, and I found a few that would have suited my colour scheme etc but it depends on whether you want to spend the money, and I didn't. (scrooge!)

The washing basket is from Ikea also ( I am sorry I can't find it on the site but I know its still there!) and divided into 2. I don't tend to sort , just throw anything in. Crazy but it works. We wash everyday so it has never bothered me.  But this basket is perfect as its narrow. The white trug you can see is my laundry basket and they are on Clearance in Target for $10 at the moment ( I also used one for storing my boots etc in yesterdays Wardrobe post)

The hanging bag is a peg bag, perfect

I framed a Stain Removal Chair by Martha Stewart , in a cheap yet pretty Big W frame for easy access and quick action. The basket has a box of wipes etc.

We replaced the trough with a lovely ceramic one from Ikea, and put in overhead and base cabinets. The best part of the makeover would have to be the benchtop. Also an Ikea buy and Hubby just cut it to size and finished the pipe area with a cord cap (the type you would use on an office desk).

All the gorgeous tags are from the very cool printable by Bianca at A Little Delightful available HERE , and I just laminated them, punched a hole and tied with some cute Bakers Twine. I orginally bought the Washing powder tin in the gorgeous blue, so that set the colour scheme for the room, and these labels and tags suited perfectly, like a match made in label heaven!!

All the important and well used products are stored here for easy access. The Stain removal supplies are in the cute white bucket, which is hanging from the rail by an S hook.
The wire rack stores anti-bac gel, baby bath etc, and the little basket hanging at the end holds plugs.

The cupboards are all from Bunnings and are part of the Flatpax range. We used the kitchen range, as there were more choices for cupboard sizes and they fit our space better. Plus I liked the idea of being able to choose different doors for the front, whereas the laundry cupboards, although a cheaper option, only came with the basic white door.
The website is great, and allowed us to plan and measure at home and just go into Bunnings to purchase the items.
Bunnings also do benchtops, as seen on the Flatpax website, but I liked the choices of laminate better from Ikea and the sizes too! Plus the Ikea ones come with extra laminate for redoing the ends if you need to trim them, and Bunnings ones don't, FYI.

The kickboard is still to go on (the part that needs to be finished) but its a matter of Noel having the time to cut them to size and fit them. Time is always an issue!!

The cupboard on the left stores baby towels, as this is where Angus gets bathed. We put a blow up change mat (which gets stored down the end of the bench against the window) purchased from HERE, on the bench and it quickly becomes a change station.
The white tub on the bottom shelf is for Noel's work clothes, I like to seperate them incase they are quite dirty and this is nice and tucked away.

Under the trough I store my cleaning products ( with a child locks on the doors) and Enjo mits etc.
All our doors on the base don't have handles, they are yet to be fitted but we are in no rush. No handles means the kids can't open them, we know how to but they can't . Smart eh?

And the little potty's sit neatly inside the door, although they aren't getting used that much anymore, they just take themselves off to the toilet.

Completed , this reno would have cost about $1000 and has made a huge impact on our life. Still not super duper cheap but its such a functional , easy to use space now, and just a fraction of the cost it would have been to get the pros in! The cupboards, bench top and trough all went in in a matter of a few hours , as DH had built them over the course of a few nights when the kids were in bed to save time on construction day.

The little bits and pieces to decorate and finish were super cheap too, but they make the space look pretty and that's what counts really, doesn't it ? ;)

Getting Organised

There has been alot of this happening around here lately!! Trying to cross jobs off the never ending list. Making way for a new baby and member to the family. Organising our documents and important things , since selling the salon. Trying to make life easier and put systems in place so that everything runs smoothly when we have 4 kids, all very young.
You get the drift.
So in the past month, we have had alot of projects on the go!! Lots of orders from Ikea, phone calls about items, searching the net for inspiration (and Pinterest!!) and trips to DH favourite shop (Bunnings of course!!)
But.... we are thrilled with the way everything is turning out and falling into place.
I am stoked with all the extra storage we have created , just by changing a few crucial pieces of furniture in our house, and making the space we have, work for us!!
Throw in my gorgeous Mums, and Noel's birthdays and the month has filled up quickly and flown by even faster!
So, thats where I have been. AWOL, and on a mission!! With only 9 weeks to go, we don't have the luxury of time, and I am sure that will certainly NOT change when the little cherub arrives either!!
And with Noel playing football, swimming lessons and the odd event/party etc on weekends, its hard to find spare moments to get these jobs done.
Life I tell ya, is awesome, but boy is it busy busy!!

One of our projects, and the important one for the kids, was a new sandpit. The old Sandpit was a 1m square box from Bunnings. Definately not big enough for 3 little people, but thye used to love it and squeeze in there like Sardines!!
So a Sunday Morning job, and the new Sandpit as complete!!

Digging out the grass complete

Lacey, after she sampled the soil, and realised it didn't taste that flash!!

Max , trying to help with a hammer!!

Stella , measuring, just to make sure Dad has done it right!

Hmmm, I somehow doubt that Max is afraid of drills, he couldn't get close enough!!

Voila!! A new, big sandpit, and even though it was sprinkling, the girls were in there playing!!

Awesome, but not so great for my floors!! Sand everywhere, all the time!
And the next morning, a peak out the patio door, and a gorgeous sight of Max, playing in his new sandpit! LOVE

Next up, was a new chest of Drawers for Stella. She was in desperate need of a new set, the old ones were the cheapest from Ikea, and had served her well for 3 years, but they no longer rolled well!
We purchased these, from Ikea, and they are the Hemnes. Nice and tall , solid, and deep drawers.

And now everything in the drawers is organised better in baskets. Easy to find, and put stuff away!! DH even puts away clothes now!!

Her shirt Drawer, singlets on far left, T-shirts in the middle, and long sleeves on the right.
And the second drawer, also the deepest (the 2 little drawers on the top hold knickers, singlets and precious things!!)

From Left ; Winter Pyjamas, Summer Pyjamas, Dancing clothes, bathers
Behind; Tights, bed socks and socks

I love the organisation, the space and the way everything stays folded and less cramped and crushed.
Money well spent!

I also managed to revamp the tired box set that has always sat upon her dresser. It holds lackies, headbands, bracelets, her baby bracelets, and other important items to be kept safe.
It was painted a manky green colour, with angels etc, however a bit of a sand, spray paint and some fabric Scrapbooking paper (purchased from Spotlight in the Cardstock section) and it was revamped quite easily!!
The Fabric paper was self sticking, however not strong enough to hold onto the wood, so I used some Spray adhesive first.  I love the way it turned out , and adds some colour to the drawers.

There has been a fair bit of constructing happening around here, all flatpacked of course. A new TV unit has gone in,(Liatorp Series from Ikea of course!!)  I will try and photograph tomorrow (it looks amazing!!), another Billy bookcase for beneath the kitchen bench top in the dining area, Lots of labelling and rearranging of boxes , and the twins have even moved rooms!!

Noel , the master at Ikea furniture, and his little helper!

I will be sure to blog about it all soon!!
This weekend, I hope we can get a new base cupboard into the laundry, so that the benchtop that is taking up a large chunk of our Garage can be moved and installed, however I dont like our chances, here's hoping!

Wisdom

Not the like that, my Wisdom teeth are killing me!!
I was supposed to have them out a few years ago BUT I chickened out fell pregnant with Stella! 3 years on, I still can't go in to get them done cos I am breastfeeding, so I have had to make a promise to my DH , to call and make the appointment, the day I stop feeding, maybe ...........
SO, even with a swollen face (yep, my cheek is swollen and inside my mouth, so much so I keep biting it!) I feel better today after my vent, see I knew this blog thing would be a good idea! I feel I have to mention too, everything seems worse for me at the moment, cos my darling Mum is away. Heaven forbid, she has gone to Melbourne for the week for a conference (with my Dad, and I do miss him too) but everything seems worse when you can't have a Mummy cuddle, snuggly cuddle or shoulder to cry on. Soooooo hurry up Mum, and how dare you leave us!! ;)

Craft for today was creating a crown. Nothing says yellow more to me than a crown and Stella loves them. We say the song,
Making a crown, making a crown, with a bit of this, and a bit of that, making it shine, making is shine, so it sparkles and twinkles all over , in starrrrrr light!!
We sang it for agggesss 10 minutes whilst she went on her merry way glueing and patting things down, and boy did she smile when it was finished.

Cutting out the crown

Stella glueing everything on it, some stickers too

Very proud of the finished product!!
Another quickie , was a balloon man, where she had to stick on his hair.

Mr Balloon man (yes I know I need a new black texta!!)

He needs a good hairdresser!

I have made up our plan for next week, let me know if you would like me to do a post on it, don't want to bore every now do we?
And I will be back with MY craft project later, nothing like suspense!!

To Market to Market to buy a...............

Fat pig? No, but LOTS of other goodies!! What a whirlwind trip to the big smoke! We left Saturday after I finished work at the salon (about 3pm departure) and got home at 8pm last night!! But... boy was it worth it!! Our beautiful little people were absolute gems on the way down, slept, talked , gooed , all the good stuff, however the trip home was something different.... unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, they were really really good, until Eneabba, alas, this time, they cracked the poopies but a quick switcheroo of seats with Mummy to the back and it was under control with the help of some yummy food. Food = winner!!
Right, onto the good stuff!! I mut begin with stating the absolute obvious!! How many super duper talented people are in this world? Ah hello Liz, heaps you say!! Well then, how many are in this wonderful state of ours? Heaps ,and it only take a trip to Upmarket to make one realise pretty quick smart!
My mum , crafty sister and I , had a great peruse around the market, and I must thank Kristy, my big sister, for "looking like a Mummy" much to her disgust, and carrying my big boy Max in a Baby Bjorn on her front, whilst I carried Lacey girl on my front in a pouch like a little koalo with her head popping out and watching everyone!! For anyone who has been to Upmarket, they will know, that prams are a no go, and such a hinderance to ones serious shopping abilities and we did not want to risk any handicaps to the latter!!
For anyone interested, and I urge all , the website link for Upmarket is here.
Take a gander at my amazing purchases, I must say in my defense too, I DID buy a few Xmas pressies, birthday pressies and had a list of "wants" and crossed them all off  = one happy stoked Liz!!

Amazingly gorgeous things from Craftapalooza, her website is HERE

My Gorgeous Apple pincushion and drawing pins!!

My free "gift" for letting her know I was an avid blog follower!!

My Mother In Laws Xmas gift

Lacey Lous Christmas gift, a Poppet from Pikelet Workshop (Facebook Page), Jen is amazing!! And I have been a follower of her on Facebook for a while now and it was awesome to see her goods in person, so much better, just gorgeous!

Amazing felt creations from Happy As Larry, I did get a gorgeous mobile too so I will post a pic when it is up!

This gorgeous pendant from a little frenchy stall, there were lots of jewellery ones , so I can't remember the name

And the items at the top of my "wish List" all in there stunning and glorious beauty. From the top, a casserole carrier in the gorgeous Amy Butler Lotus fabric, an ironing board cover (like I iron, meh) , a tea cosy in the lotus fabric too, and a uber adorable oven mit!!All stunning and better in real life, from the Modern Homewares, HERE is her Etsy store!

And.. how devine are these? So antiquey (ok I made that word up, but doesnt everyone?!) and I just love the sparkle and colour!! For moi of course!!

Ok, no trip to Perth is complete (well not one that lasts only 18 hours anyway, without a trip to Harbour Town, and Cotton On Kids, I love it , and its so great for boys clothes, and I picked up these letters, and I will be using these and a few more for a future project so stay tuned!!

Now, I know, call me silly, but I do not feel like I have finished a day off properly without "creating something", and I know people will giggle at that, knowing my life, however it somehow makes all the hard stuff, the dual crying, the spewing, the nappies, the toilet trips, the cleaning, the washing, the cooking, the wages, the salon duties, and all the other guff thrown in, all better, and rosy and ..... quite literally ... bearable. On days when I just want to curl up into the feotal position and rock myself to sleep (haha ok ok a little over exageration, but you get the gist , yes?)
                                                                  So here is todays.......
Remember this? The whiteboard from the last post? Well this is it now.....

A gorgeous , covered magnet board for my favourite things......
And here it is complete with a few piccies and making good use of those magnets from Craftapalooza!! I have actually made some myself and they will be on sale at the Baby and Kids market in November!

This makeover was too , too easy. I just traced my board on the reverse side of my fabric, sewed around all but one edge , making sure the ribbon was in place (note the ribbon is different than what I had previously photographed but I like this better!!) and then hand stitched the opening!! Now just the finishing touch, going onto the wall "HUBBY, I have a job for you!!"

I got this great idea out of an amazing book and one that I LOVE LOVE LOVE!!

Seams to Me by Anna Maria Horner

And my project from last week;

;Coasters, these too will be available at Baby and Kids market and online at Bizzy Dayz soon!!

Now, for tomorrows project, transforming this;

Into something special for somewhere in my home!! (Purchased off a Buy and Sell Facebook page for $8!!)

Ok... so there you have it, lots of Amazings, and Loves but thats me at the moment, loving and amazed at EVERYTHING!
